Dog killed in own yard when two dogs climb fence, attack

THE NEXT HALF-HOUR. BOB KEALING, WESH 2 NEWS. A DOG KILLED IN ITS OWN YARD WHEN TWO DOGS APPARENTLY ON THE LOOSE MANAGE TO GET INSIDE OF THE FENCE. THE OWNER OF THE DOG KILLED IN THE INCIDENT IS NOT ONLY DEALING WITH LOSING A CHERISHED PET BUT WITH THE IDEA THAT THE DOGS RUNNING LOOSE WERE GIVEN BACK TO THEIR OWNER. WESH 2’S DAVE MCDANIEL IS LIVE IN CASSELBERRY WITH DETAILS. DAVE? THIS ALL HAPPENED WEDNESDAY MORNING. THE DOG’S OWNER HAD GONE TO WORK AND THE DOG WHICH IS NORMALLY INSIDE WITH ITS OWNER WHEN HE IS HOME NORMALLY SPENDS THE DAY OUTSIDE HERE IN THE YARD WHEN THERE IS NOBODY AT HOME. THIS IS THAT DOG’S DOMAIN. UNFORTUNATELY IT WAS MAULED TO DEATH A LITTLE AFTER EIGHT IN THE MORNING. SHE WAS TINY, ALWAYS FULL OF ENERGY. 13-YEAR-OLD NELLA KILLED IN HER OWN YARD. IT REALLY HURTS. BECAUSE SHE WAS A LOVABLE DOG. SHE GOT ALONG WITH KIDS. NEVER BIT ANYONE. A WITNESS TOLD CASSELBERRY COPS WEDNESDAY MORNING TWO DOGS RUNNING LOOSE, DOGS PHOTOGRAPHED BY A POLICE OFFICER, GOT INTO THE YARD AND THE FIGHT WAS ON. NELLA WAS KILLED. THIS IS NOT SOME FLIMSY WIRE. I MEAN, THEY BENT IT ALL OUT OF SHAPE. THE GATE IS BENT BUT THE WITNESS SAYS SHE SAW THE DOGS CLIMB OVER THE CHAIN LINKED FENCE. THE POLICE REPORT SAYS ANIMAL SERVICES LET THE OWNER TAKE THE DOGS BACK. THROUGH EMAIL ANIMAL SERVICES POINTED OUT STATE LAW LAYS OUT TWO WAYS A DOG CAN BE DECLARED DANGEROUS. IT EITHER INFLICTED SEVERE INJURY ON A HUMAN BEING OR THAT IT MORE THAN ONCE INJURED OR KILLED A DOMESTIC ANIMAL. THERE HAVE BEEN TWO RECENT CALLS. IN THE FIRST, A GUY WALKING HIS DOG SAID THE DOGS RUNNING LOOSE CHARGED HIM. HIS FRIEND TOLD US. HE GOT BIT IN HIS FOREARM BUT IT DIDN’T PUNCTURE HIS SKIN. SO THE DOGS DON’T MEET THE DANGEROUS DOG DEFINITION. NOW THEY ATTACK SOMEBODY ELSE’S DOG. SORRY TO SAY BUT THAT SHOULD BE IT. IT HURTS MY HEART THAT, YOU KNOW, THEY JUSTIFY THAT ANIMALS CAN BE KILLED IN A WAY. NOBODY WAS HOME WHERE THE DOGS RAN OFF. THE OWNER DID CALL ME LATE IN THE AFTERNOON SAYING SHE WAS SORRY THEY GOT AWAY. THAT THE DOGS SHE DESCRIBES AS LAB MIXES ARE SWEET AND GENTLE AND SHE DOESN’T BELIEVE THEY DID WHAT PEOPLE ARE CLAIMING. LATE THIS AFTERNOON I WAS ABLE TO GET AHEAD OF THE ANIMAL SERVICES MANAGER BY PHONE. HE TELLS ME THERE’S QUITE AN INVESTIGATION THEY STILL NEED TO GO ON THAT INITIAL DOG WALKING INCIDENT. BUT HE SAYS RIGHT NOW THESE DOGS THAT WERE RUNNING LOOSE DO NOT MEET THE DEFINITION FOR DANGEROUS DOGS. THAT’S WHY THEY WERE RETURNED TO THEIR OWNER. THE OWNER WAS CITED FOR LETTING THE DOGS RUN LOOSE AND CITED FOR WHAT HAPPENED HERE IN THIS YARD.

  1. If only this fence was properly maintained we wouldn't now be watching this video. As I see it the moral of the story is: build/buy a proper fence and with doing that you avoid your dog being killed, making a law suit to your neighbor for killing your dog etc.

  2. As someone that has owned a pit bull and now owns a doberman, these dogs can be absolutely wonderful pets. The pit bull (now passed) was a therapy dog and my doberman a service dog. They do fine with animals and people. However, they are both large breeds that can have high prey drives. NEVER let large dogs of any kind run free around the neighborhood. Some dogs do not see small dogs as dogs, but as prey to go after. These dogs have pit in them, its obvious, and yes I wont sugar coat it, pit bull and bullie type dogs can have a large prey drove and more of an urge to go for other dogs. When they get a hold of a dog, they wont stop till its dead. This isn't true for some, like our now passed pit bull, but they are a breed that needs to be contained at all times. Leashes or a fenced yard. Watch them and train them correctly to not have that obsessive urge to try and fight (which is why they were bred, to fight). It can be done, look up Sharky the pit bull who lived with all sorts of animals and people. With lab mixed in, this is a very high prey driven dog. DO NOT get a big dog if you can not control them.

  3. Change the definition: One Bite need to be muzzled outside at all time, Two bites – 10 day quarantine with Owner paying expenses. At anytime – death of animal or person – dog is put down immediately (no matter if there is a history of biting or not) @ owner's expense.

  4. She's "sorry?" It's HER responsibility to keep her dogs contained. Period. It could have been a child. Doesn't anyone use common sense any more?

  5. Ignorant laws, they attack a human automatically dangerous, same as attacking another dog or killing one. No second chances. What if the next one a child dies? Is that justifiable to Officers and lawmakers? What if it were their child or grandchild, you bet it would change then.

  6. She doesn't believe it! There are photos of her dogs in the neighbors yard, chewing on the little dog! Shitpull deniers at work…. again. Yeah it's not the 'lab' in your dog that makes them killers, it's the pit in them, a breed specifically bred to fight other dogs. No other breed needs training to stop/prevent them from killing other dogs and even people! Over 30 poor humans are killed in the US every year by pit type dogs, approx. another 5 are killed by Rottweilers, huskys, occasionally a German Shepherd or boxer? Imagine being killed by a dog? The worst death ever ( I would hate to be stabbed to death too), but pet dogs should not kill people, they kill people more than any wild animals put together! Our own pet dogs!

  7. Good ole Pitbull mixes !
Pitbulls have such a dominant genetic trigger that even when mixed with normal dogs they are still extremely dangerous.
    Natural born killers!
A ban is in order across the whole US.

And I don't want to hear the old excuse that it's a bad owner. Yes bad owners can make these dogs even worse but that doesn't explain the countless maulings and deaths from sweet, loving dogs that were cared for, socialized and trained yet something triggered them one day to maul or kill neighbors or even their own family members.

  8. @1.25 more than once injured or killed a domestic animal.
To injure or kill a domestic animal, once is more than enough
    Crazy
