so how do you translate from being an athlete to being a coach how do you try to teach your athletes what you learned I mean I've had like my strong background with my grandpa who was like national coach for ten years my old coach from college Nicky Frank who was a two-time Olympian and both of them are very disciplined in what they do I mean fencing practice is not like the funnest thing to do but I mean and I just feel like that translate into every sport because you're doing the same thing every day you know but you have to come with a with a fresh mining have your goals every time like remember what you want to do so I I try to help my athletes in that way right now I mean I have four people that have never fenced in their life so I mean seeing them achieve little goals that I set for them every week it's really awesome because they also get excited and that makes me happy because I feel like I'm helping somebody else in a different way so that's what I like about coaching and they're actually picking up really well I'm very impressed I mean I've only been doing it for like the past month month and a half kind of and they I mean they watch the videos and there's some present like they try to translate what they see in fencing videos into what they're doing and it's working pretty well so I mean I have I have great expectations for that goes into being a good fencer from both a mental and physical I mean I feel like fencing is like a chess game so you have to be very smart and like know your movement be you know your movements before anybody else knows what you're going to do so I a lot of things come into play to vehicle fencer I mean speed strategy you have to be patient like very patient in that the I mean not every fan sir gets to be very patient so that's something that you can work under in practice and like also tournaments it helps you I mean you have to have endurance because I mean I fencing tournament usually starts at like 7am and you're not done fencing until 4pm or even 7 p.m. depending on how to lay the tournament goes in our talk a little bit your schedule I mean you're you're going to go to Temple to your alma mater for your first tournament well I mean temple open its a preparation tournament my girls will fit will face a lot of people that they will see throughout the means that we'll have in November December in February and it is a intense tournament there's there's a lot of phantoms in there and all of them have experienced like college experience some are like pretty new to it because they have like clubs that are in college as well so those clothes aren't so as being such a Division one program but it still good fencing to getting you know and that will set the tone for the next tournament that we have at Penn State talk a little bit about how the beats work and how fencing works in general I mean the way I explain fencing for the first time is the art of hit without being hit so mean you basically I mean you have three weapons you have oil epping saber an epic you have you can hit anywhere in the body from toe to the top of your head anywhere and there's double touch it so if I if you and your opponent hit at the same time you both get a touch and it depends on the timing of the machine as well you have foil and savory which are right away weapons so what does that mean when somebody's attacking you and you get blog their attack with a parry that's what it's called and then you hit that's your touch because you you block the attack or per se i attack you you block it it's yours you know and for foil you here in the torso for Sabre you hear from your arms your waist all the way up up into your head more foil is the only one where you can't hit in the head so that's that's basically what fencing is and how long okay so there's three minutes where you find somebody and it goes up to five points in college frenzy so in those three minutes you have to finish a five of course and then if you're tied let's say we're four four times up you have priority which is basically flipping a coin whoever gets head or tails gets priority and that is fencing for one minute and then if nobody scores a touch then whoever he wins but if I squirt torture the other presence course touch of course a person wins and that happens only in foil and epee and savor it doesn't happen because it's pretty fast so you don't even you don't even finish it one minute when your fencing saber so this one
