Playing table tennis with an Olympian

I am Dan Haggerty Cassidy Quinn is on vacation so you're stuck with me for the next half hour but don't worry we're talking about some really cool stuff the 2020 games in Tokyo the summer games are only a year away which can you believe that they're already getting this close and the excitement is starting to build we're talking about one of the 33 events from one of the 33 games being table tennis this is the kind of thing we all have in our basement right we've all played this game before but you've never seen it played like the gentleman behind me can play it or the young man in the foreground can play it we're going to talk to Sean O'Neill who is one of our local Olympians you were in the 88 and 92 games it had to have been the experience of your life oh absolutely making it in the first games of table tennis when it went in in Seoul Korea was a huge big thing but then to make it in 92 a lot of people remember the Dream Team in 92 so I got a chance to meet some of those guys but really a great honor to represent Team USA that yes so the the dream team do you hung out with a couple of those guys they came over to the village Charles Barkley and Patrick you and their ask about ping pong cos Jordan and Christian late and were like on the table at the hotel they were staying they couldn't get them off so they came over for some tips did you did you did you did you show up Michael Jordan no no no I stuck to worrying about the Chinese and table test that was tough enough yes probably probably a good bet so tell me about this game why is this such a fun game you know there are a few that kind of drop your jaw like this event when you see it on that Olympic level where the competitors are like 20 feet back from the table it's um it's completely amazing I mean worldwide it's the number two sport after soccer and participation so the whole world is watching the Chinese are amazing but the Japanese are on track to give a great battle in the Tokyo games now when it comes to the US team when it comes to Oregon you cultivate a lot of the talent that comes from the state including look out the young if you guys want to come back from the video show this gentleman here playing playing table tennis right here Kevin Wynn is 11 years old I had the chance to play earlier and it was like he took me to school like I've know but you you made some great returns I could use this you scored some edges a couple net balls and then you got one of his smash back what makes this little guy so special it's just his focus great concentration plays your days a week three to five hours a day I mean that's what you have to put in if you want to be able to reach the Olympic level when you kind of leave the junior event how do you know who's between a great player or great athlete and somebody who can go into that next Olympic level in the sport it all comes down to passion whichever kid is willing to be there longer than anyone else shows up early and just it doesn't take losing isn't option they just keep coming and keep coming in so far Kevin's really done it what do you think makes this game so special in Tokyo they've been talking about the preparation the city has already put in in the countries put in there almost a 90% done with their venue they have almost their entire situation they have a hold on all of it which you never hear as we approach a games what do you expect from the games this year I I think they'll be first-rate the Japanese are so focused on table tennis it's a chance for them to guarantee a medal in the world championships they won the mixed doubles so going in against the Chinese all eyes are on Japan it'd be like if the US was hosting the Olympics like it we're gonna do in Los Angeles how are we gonna do in basketball Japanese are really focused on table tennis would you mind playing a little bit Orlando yeah let me get out of this like work Kevin just oh boy would you show us how it is really done we'd like to see some of some of the wait till you see this guys I wish you were here in the room with us but Orlando what has happened Londo I'm noticing a difference in the way the sport is played I'm dizzy then again Shawn isn't in a full suit I'm thinking that might add a little something to do that's how you're gonna bail me out on that huh yes well you did quite loss so as you as we see literally a close to an Olympic level
