Purdue University – Hardwood Lumber


♪ (music) ♪ The hardwoood lumber and furniture type product manufacturing industry in Indiana is a very significant industry. Most Indiana folks don’t recognize it. They think were famous for corn and beans and hogs and we are but the hardwood industry lumber industry is right up there with it. We have got somewhere over 4 million acres of really high quality hardwoods in Indiana. Indiana is noted for species like walnut of course and particularlly white oak is a world famous species We have a lot of European and foreign buyers that come to Indiana looking just particularly for White Oak as well as some of the other species Purdue University and specifically the department of Forestry owns several woodland properties through out the state. These properties have been used for various sorts of research projects over the years and they are also sustainably managed. Which means when we have trees that are getting old, or mature, or overcrowded that we remove those trees and make them available. Sell them to the local industry so they can process them into lumber and that returns some money back to the system, back to the University and it makes a real world experience for us, the faculty, the students, and everyone involved. Classes frequently go out. They look at all sorts of different aspects ranging from wildlife management to timber management to tree falling exercises and just the whole array of the different subject areas that we address within the department of Forestry and Natural Resources. ♪ (music) ♪
