RNR DOCS: Fencing Episode 2

today I'm participating in a veteran's fencing epee tournament which is actually probably the toughest tournament of the year I first started fencing in my second year at university I got a job I got married I kids it just it just faded out of my life and that lasted for 32 years the km tournament is really the highlight of veterans fencing in Canada during the year it's important to prepare mentally and physically to get ready for that just because the level of competition is higher than any other event that will occur during the normal year feeling a bit nervous there are a lot of very good fencers both from Canada in the US it's going to be a challenging tournament I'll be happy if I make the top 16 the most important thing to me isn't his name do with the medals what's really important is just participate I really like the fact that he has an interest that is his own it's an opportunity for him to physically challenged himself mentally challenged himself I think it's really nice for couples to each have their own interests as well as shared interests one of the things we do together as a which certainly helps me is is we play squash regularly through the winter and we don't keep score vodka doesn't come to all the tournaments but certainly the the special ones that when she does come she'll often take video then we can sit and analyze the adjustments that might need to make in order to to do a better job as the turn of the proceeds because the thing about fencing that's so important it isn't just the skill of being able to fence but it's being able to size up your opponent and make sure that whatever his technique is you find his weakness and then you can beat him the next time I'd say half the people here I fence with 10 or 12 times a year so we got to know each other very well we all have mutual respect both as people in competitors a lot of the guys here really were helpful to me in in helping me get back into fencing and the thing about fencing is the way you learn defensive the way you improve in phases is by fencing against people that are better than you because that's how you learn you learn by getting beat just a lot of fun it's a great challenge it's terrific exercise it's just one way of really feeling alive and in the moment when you're out there on the peace I think the thing that I would emphasize is for me is is coming to fencing has really been a way to recapture some of what I experienced the university but also it opened the door to a whole set of interactions with with people who I would not otherwise have have met and all of the health benefits and the excitement and the focus and all the other things that happen as a result of getting involved with a competitive sport like fencing very place 65
