Climbing is a particularly effective
warm up for loosening shoulders and the lower back area before your regular training routine. Set the treadwall to auto stop and climb very slowly for
three minutes at a full positive angle. Use the hand holds that are widely spaced and easy while using high steps and crossing
moves to warm your lower body. Allow your legs to do the work. Next, set a neutral angle and climb for two minutes while focusing on long arm movements and slow reaches. Throw in an occasional static stretch and a wide range of motion to work your
back and shoulders. Lastly, climb for one minute at an
overhanging angle and push in your hips and twist your
torso to warm up your lower back and core muscles to avoid excess arm
fatigue. Continuous climbing is a great
cardiovascular workout, simple and non impacting. It is a fun and
highly effective way to add variety to your usual aerobic choices. Using a positive angle and auto stop, adjust the speed until you
are climbing comfortably. Without the wall pausing, climb for five
minutes with holds that are close together. At this time, focus on good footwork,
generating power with your legs and leading with your hands. Let yourself
fall into an easy rhythm to avoid arm fatigue. After five minutes choose
only two colors to follow with your hands, but keep paying attention to your feet.
While actively searching for your next hold, switch the colors again or eliminate a
color to fine-tune your focus. If you need more
of a challenge, set the treadwall to continuous and let
the wall pace your climbing. Climbing is also a true functional
strength activity. It is a full body, closed chain workout where the user makes real choices. This
basic three rep sample builds upper body and core muscles in
three decreasing reps, from larger to smaller muscles. Begin
with an overhanging angle and use the easiest route or the large
holes to climb sixty feet. Remember to push off your feet to
transfer weight to your lower body. Maintain control of your core and your
balance to achieve full body control instead of overly stressed fingers. Take a
rest, shakeout your arms, and then decrease the angle slightly. Begin a forty-foot climb using slightly
smaller holes concentrating on good foot placement.
Pick a route that has a variety of movements so that you can go slowly and powerfully
throughout your full arm movement while focusing on your upper body. Take
another rest, shakeout your arms, decrease the angle
again and climbed twenty feet using the
smallest holes optimizing every foot placement for
strength. These smaller holes will focus the stress in your forearms and calves. For harder workouts lengthen distances and increase the angle on the machine,
but go slowly when starting. Train with a partner and alternate
climbing and resting. For ground-based routines, set the
climbing mode to continuous and use the speed knob to set resistance.
Start with wide reaches using all the holes, or switch to a tight
pattern to increase intensity. Try a full grip to
start follow with your fingers to mix the
focus and intensity. Chair bound athletes will find these
ground-based sessions accessible and highly productive. Just remove the
mat and adjust the wall to overhanging.

  1. I just independently thought of this contraption a few hours ago. Before googling whether this already existed (which of course it would, everything's already been invented before I come up with the idea), I went over the design and features with a mate and we came up with ideas that extend beyond what this wall and make it far more interesting for the user. I'm not going into detail here, as at this stage I have the inclination to construct my own version of this device with the specifications and features that I have conceived.

    It's a bloody good idea, even if I say say myself. I tip my hat to the inventor who beat me to this idea, but my version will be uniquely superior in a way that will make it more far more appealing to the enthusiast climber.

    I'm surprised that I am only just discovering that this exists, and only because I started googling because I thought of it myself. Why aren't these more common? Well I know the answer(s) to that, and how to rectify the situation. Now I just have to find the time and resources to begin production.
