if you need a little work done on your fence and explore tells us a place for you no CD we aren't mending fences we're going to visit a fencing competition even better we're gonna see who can put a fence together the fast no no the sport of fencing with the swords and the competition put on by the tulsa fencing club we like it we kind of got into it so we could get more community involvement we don't let fencers Spence without their parents so the parents come and watch what they're doing and that's kind of what we want to see we want to see the whole group the whole family we have several family members that are fencing plus we have wives and husbands that are fencing so it's been a really good deal for the whole family and they can all sit here one of them could be fencing one of them could be running on the track but it's been really good with me I mean that's what we kind of started it for the fencing club started actually this fencing club in 1963 so that makes it one of the oldest fencing clubs in Oklahoma it's been through several carnations several different looks this particular Club basically reformed in August so we teach foil and epee and savor here and we start with the basics foil we make everyone plays and spoil which is the right away weapon which is the training weapon in fencing and then we let them go to other weapons but right now today's competition is soil in foil fencing the torso which is this lemay that everyone's wearing the silver lemay so the torso front and back is the target it also has right away so if I attack you you have to defend me to stop my attack so if I attack you and you don't defend you get stabbed if you defend now I have to keep away from you and not get stabbed so if I attack you you stop the attack and you come back and stab me then you get the point so there's a little rule going on right away and you have to stop it now if both of you go at each other and you both stab each other and this sport we just throw that out because both of you got hit so we started over it's not a normal sport you actually actually have to think and be in some kind of shape because now you're looking across the strip to somebody that wants to stab you and you're trying not to be stabbed so it's kind of oh my gosh what am i doing I don't want him to stab me but I need to stab him to get a score so there you get to use the brain and their athleticism we have a lot of kids this is their first sport but really like it because they they can think they can solve puzzles they can stab him before they get stabbed so that and that's really intriguing I've got some adults who like it's because it's physical and they have to think they start with our youngest Spencer in this club right now is six years old we have a 67 year old fence or fencing today so there's there is some age categories but in this tournament it's open so I can have 39 year old fence or spends in the 67 year old fencers and there are tournaments for younger kids there's you know under 10 under 13 so everyone can fence in their own group or they convince everyone I'm safe this is probably one of the safest sports even though there's weapons and there's pointing all this all the equipment we have our masks and our jackets and our knickers I'll protect you from getting stabbed or break broken blades things like that so it's very safe in our club you can just come by any tuesday or thursday we have introduction classes we have beginning classes and today's tournament we have actually five clubs involved from Oklahoma and Arkansas so pretty much every club in our division is represented here today we have guys that travel we have a top-rated fencer in our club that's in the veterans for he's a huge 23rd in the nation and then we've got some kids from our division that are really high rated so they travel matter of fact in December will be going to Dallas for a big national circuit event so we have several fencers who go out and travel
